Supporting Youth Through EDGE Ministry
Alicia volunteers for a program called EDGE, a middle school Catholic youth ministry. The program is designed to help middle school students grow in their faith in a fun and engaging environment. “The program runs throughout the school year, and we meet biweekly for activities like group games, team building, small group discussions, music, meals, and conversations about their faith,” Alicia shares. “The focus is to create a welcoming space where the kids can explore their faith and build strong connections.”
Each year, the ministry also hosts a 5-day event at a camp in Haliburton called EDGE Camp. This annual retreat gives students the opportunity to experience exciting outdoor activities like ziplining, rock climbing, and water sports. However, the heart of the camp is about much more. “Our middle schoolers have a unique opportunity to dive deep into their faith in a very meaningful way,” Alicia explains.
Why EDGE Matters
Alicia’s passion for EDGE is clear, and her dedication stems from the impact the program has on the students. “The Edgers are my inspiration,” she says. “I believe our world needs more light, and young people have the ability to bring that light into the world. It’s very humbling to be part of their faith journey in such a fun and supportive environment.”
Over her five years with EDGE, and more than seven years in youth ministry overall, Alicia has seen firsthand how transformative the experience can be for the kids involved. “It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the change that takes place,” she shares. “By the end of the school year, I’ve seen kids who were shy and hesitant gain confidence and come out of their shells. They form lasting friendships and support one another, even when they don’t know each other.”
For Alicia, being part of EDGE is not just about giving back, but also about personal fulfillment. “I always feel like I receive way more than I give,” she says. “This ministry has provided me with a sense of community and fellowship, and I’ve built meaningful, lasting friendships along the way.”
How You Can Get Involved
If you’re inspired by Alicia’s story and want to get involved in a cause, her advice is simple: take the first step. “For me, I learned about this ministry through church announcements and reached out to the Youth Minister,” she explains. “Reaching out to an organization that resonates for you and speaking to a representative is a great way to get started.”
Regardless of the cause, Alicia believes that if you are passionate about something, you never know how rewarding it can be until you get involved.
