While previously these events were held in person, over the past few years we have shifted to a virtual format to better meet the needs of our customers. In 2021 we hosted four well-attended forums that brought together industry experts to discuss topics that are on the minds of customers and allowed customers to connect and address common challenges.

Combatting Fraud in 2021
Many key stakeholders in the lending industry face increasing amounts of fraud and evolving fraudsters who are constantly looking for new and smarter ways to take advantage of lending institutions and Canadian borrowers. As part of Fraud Prevention Month, Teranet hosted a panel of experts to share their insights about this topic. John Walker, Foreign Service National Investigator with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Wade Duxbury, Detective Constable with York Regional Police Organized Crime and Intelligence Services, Ana Ialeggio, Senior Manager of Litigation and Special Investigations with MCAP and Steve Low, Chief Executive Officer for Consolidated Recovery Group focused on topics in relation to organized crime, cross-border vehicle and mortgage fraud. The panelists shared fraud mitigation tips and offered their thoughts on how the lending industry can work together to combat fraud as it becomes more prevalent.
Overall, the main message our panelists delivered was that fraud is becoming more common and much more sophisticated; the only way that the lending industry will be able to combat fraud in the future is to work together and collaborate. Click here to watch the full session.
An Update on First-Time Homebuyers
The activity of first-time homebuyers, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, has become a topic of focus throughout the real estate industry. Teranet addressed this topic with a Market Insight Forum that featured facts and analyses relevant to this important segment of buyers in Ontario, as well as a panel of experts including Deepak Bansal from Dominion Lending Centres – Expert Financial, J.P. Boutros from Mortgage Professionals Canada, Steve Flemming from RE/MAX Prime Properties, Marc Shendale from Sagen and Alison Simpson from Key.
The forum fostered an important dialogue amongst industry partners about common challenges first-time homebuyers face, and what solutions can be implemented to make it easier for this buyer segment to purchase homes in the future. Innovation in Real Estate
Innovation is a constant in the real estate industry, and we understand how important it is for our customers to keep up-to-date with new technologies in this ever-evolving industry. To address this important topic, Teranet hosted a Market Insight Forum with a panel of industry experts, including George Carras, Founder & CEO of R-Labs Canada Inc., Elgin Farewell, President & CEO of Teranet, Carlos Grass, President of Stratus Data Systems and Tim Hudak CEO of OREA.

Women in Leadership
Our final Market Insight Forum of 2021 took place in October in recognition of Women’s History Month in Canada. Our first annual Women in Leadership session featured a panel of industry leaders from across the industries that Teranet serves. Frances Hinojosa, President and Co-Founder of Tribe Financial Group, Hali Noble, SVP Broker Relations at Fisgard Asset Management Corporation, Merredith MacLennan, Partner at Merovitz Potechin LLP, and Michelle Goodridge, Founder of REAL Management Group discussed the paths they followed to get to their current roles and the challenges they face as women in their industries.
